This Memorial Day….
Leave the first response May 25, 2009 / Posted in PersonalA lot of people forget about what this day is truly about. Most think it’s another day off, a long weekend, the start of camping season. Remember Memorial Day is to commemorate the brave U.S. men and women who died while in the military service.
Memorial Day formerly was observed on May 30. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) advocate returning to this fixed date, although the significance of the date is tenuous. The VFW stated in a 2002 Memorial Day Address:
“Changing the date merely to create three-day weekends has undermined the very meaning of the day. No doubt, this has contributed a lot to the general public’s nonchalant observance of Memorial Day”
I completely agree!
If you see someone in uniform or know someone that served, thank them, because without them we would not have the freedom nor the ability to do the things we do today for granted.
I thank them those who have fought and died for us and I hope you take some time to do the same.
Here are some pictures I took last year at Mt. Tahoma National Cemetery last year up on Flickr.
